Ten Reasons we Must Abandon the Adventist Guidelines on Abortion, by Nic Samojluk

Unborn 6

1. The Adventist Guidelines on abortion were created for the express purpose of allowing what the Lord forbade: the shedding of innocent blood, and the murder of innocent unborn children. This is evident from the history of the Adventist church as documented by George Gainer:

“Abortion: history of Adventist guidelines”

“The Wisdom of Solomon”

2. They are based on tradition, designed by fallible human beings, and in a direct opposition to Scripture.

3. In 1970 the church faced the prospect of bankruptcy in one of its hospitals—the Castle Memorial Hospital in the State of Hawaii. The choice was between Money and the Life of the unborn. The church chose Money over Life.

The church chose to believe a lie, that we could serve both Money and God at the same time. Jesus told us that this was impossible.

“You cannot serve both God and money.” [Luke 16:13]

4. God used four words to prohibit the killing of innocent human beings—“You shall not murder.” The church used 1314 words to allow what the Lord has forbidden.

5. The guidelines allow the murder of unborn children under a variety of circumstances, including when a woman is faced with an unwanted pregnancy that affects her mental health. Since every unwanted pregnancy is bound to cause a mental depression in a woman, this means that all abortions are justified under said guidelines.

“Abortions for reasons of birth control, gender selection, or convenience are not condoned by the Church. Women, at times however, may face exceptional circumstances that present serious moral or medical dilemmas, such as significant threats to the pregnant woman’s life, serious jeopardy to her health, severe congenital defects carefully diagnosed in the fetus, and pregnancy resulting from rape or incest.”

All a woman needs to say to her doctor is: “I am mentally depressed; I cannot concentrate on my studies or work; I want to get rid of this unborn child;” and bingo, another innocent unborn child is sacrificed for the sake of convenience and lifestyle. And let’s not forget that mental depression is a temporary condition, while death is permanent and irreversible.

6. The church allows for each hospital to interpret said guideline without monitoring from outside sources, this means that it is up to each individual Adventist medical facility to implement said guidelines without any restraint.

“Church institutions should be provided with guidelines for developing their own institutional policies in harmony with this statement.”

8. Said guidelines allow the killing of an innocent unborn child in order to protect—not the life of the mother—but her lifestyle. The life of the unborn is sacrificed while the life of the rapist is protected. This is contrary to biblical principles. The Bible condemns punishing the child for the sins of its parents.

“Fathers shall not be put to death because of their children, nor shall children be put to death because of their fathers. Each one shall be put to death for his own sin.” [Deuteronomy 24:16]

The victim of rape can, with God’s grace, recover from her terrible ordeal and enjoy her life. This recovery is not available to the victim of abortion

9. The guidelines specify that an abortion should be performed for the most serious reason:

“Abortion should be performed only for the most serious reasons.”

When the life of the pregnant woman is in serious jeopardy and there is no reasonable hope of saving both the life of the mother and her unborn child—an ectopic pregnancy for example—then we have a “most serious reason.” If the physician can save only one life, then the doctor’s efforts are still pro-life. It is better to save one life than loosing two!

In the case of pregnancy due to rape or mental depression, we do not have “the most serious reason” because the intention is killing the unborn baby instead of saving both lives if possible. Under such circumstances, there is always a better option available to the pregnant woman: giving the baby up for adoption.

10. Those Guidelines on Abortion were designed to negate what the Lord prohibited when he inserted the “Do not murder” into his Decalogue. There is only one remedy available to the Adventist church: Doing away with a tradition created by fallible Adventist theologians and ethicists.

It took Rome several centuries to replace God’s Word with human tradition. We Adventists did this in a single century. The guidelines on abortion must go! They need o be abolished. This is my humble opinion.
