Sola Scriptura, the Wesleyan Quadrilateral, and Abortion

On January 26, 2019, Gerald Winslow gave a presentation dealing witch abortion at the Roy Branson Legacy Sabbath School and defended the Adventist “Guidelines on Abortion” which he helped create decades earlier. I asked David Larson to grant me equal time in order to present the Biblical view of abortion. This was granted and on February 23 I started our prolife presentation with the help of Andrew Michell.

When Michell was done with answering two questions submitted by Larson, the presentation was interrupted by Larson and my answer to the remaining questions was aborted in order to give more time for Michell, who had flown from the Philippines for this special occasion, to dialogue with the audience.

There were several questions from the audience, but the main objection to he Biblical view presented by Michell came form David Larson who argued that Michell had limited his presentation to the Bible, thus omitting the “Wesleyan Quadrilateral” that included reason, tradition, and experience, besides the Bible for theological discussion.

The question is: Who was right, Michell or Larson? If reason and tradition are permitted in the establishment of religious doctrine, then Larson was right, but if the Bible is the final authority on religious dogma, then Michell’s view of abortion was the correct one.

The problem for Larson is that the Adventist Church holds Scripture as supreme in doctrinal matters. We are not Methodists—we are Seventh-day Adventists! We do not grant reason and tradition equal authority with that of Scripture.

I encourage you to watch the following videos that provide interesting and meaningful details dealing with this important prolife event that took place in Loma Linda, California.

  1. Reason, experience, and tradition, have no authority over the Bible. I hate the quadrilateral because it brings so much error into the Methodist church.
